SJCRG: The tide of caregiven is rising and too little is done too help their caregivers.
The “Ask Medicare” Initiative is a good step but we need to go beyond information providing. The caregiver needs a supporting framework from congress and the state. Otherwise we are going to see more discrimination in the workplace of the 40+ taking care of their 70+ years old parents. Guess who will be let go during economical downturns. Don’t count on the sympathy from struggling 25+ starting their families….

CRG: Family Caregiver Protection in the workplace seems weak, as opposed to sex discrimination, etc.

“Q: Are caregivers a protected group under the federal EEO statutes?

A: No. The federal EEO statutes do not prohibit discrimination based solely on parental or other caregiver status. Under the federal EEO laws, discrimination must be based on a protected characteristic such as sex or race. However, some state or local laws may provide broader protections for caregivers. A particular caregiver also may have certain rights under other federal laws, including the Family and Medical Leave Act. ”
