New device developed for Diastolic Chronic Heart Failure patients (Ivanhoe)


MediNewsDigest: This link to an Ivanhoe interview with Dr Matar offers a very clear discussion on diastolic vs. systolic CHF. Dr Matar,director of the Cardiac Care Unit at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Fla, is developing a an implanted device, the Rheo., to help Diastolic Chronic Heart Failure patients. The device is continuous stimulating the baro-receptors – the signal that comes back from the brain stem to the heart to help it relax. Device, the “Rheos”, is at various stages of clinical trial.

FDA and Infusion Pumps Risks


SJCRG: Those devices can have safety issues. quoting the FDA:
“..
The most common types of reported problems have been related to:

software defects, including failures of built-in safety alarms;
user interface issues, such as ambiguous on-screen instructions that lead to dosing errors; and
mechanical or electrical failures, including components that break under routine use, premature battery failures, and sparks or pump fires.
Failures of infusion pumps have been observed across multiple manufacturers and pump types. The FDA says that many of the reported problems appear to be related to deficiencies in device design and engineering.

Do you understand the drugs you have been prescribed? Stakes are High!(Ivanhoe)


SJCRG: A good warning about drug adverse effect. But then again, your problem might be so bad that you don’t care..
Nobody can/should make that decision for you!Note a common definition of rare adverse effect is 0.1% of patients taking the drug. not much but still 1000 out of a million…
